The ways and actions of directing the affairs and leading a group of people is crucial in the over growth and development of any nation. In addition to providing direction, control, and guidance, effective leaders exhibit confidence, ambition, commitment, and courage in achieving the goals and objectives of his economic growth policies.

Africa is burdened with poor leadership and lack of good governance. Many African leaders have knowledge gap, lack vision, and policy execution. Reasons abound for the failures of most African leaders, and some of these include, corruption, incompetent leadership, and disregard for rule of law. The resultant effect of bad and ineffective leadership in Africa are lack of strong institutions, weak and poor growth and development policies, and weak social and economic structures.

Leaders empower, inspire, and motivate people. They lead the desired change in the country, and have shared vison of the various reforms needed for change. Effective leadership is the major factor in providing the right direction for a country to have sound socio-economic, and institutional policies. The world has had renowned leaders who have transformed their countries from despair to greatness. The world has seen leadership in men and women who have shaped history by transforming their countries from “third world” to some of the most productive, innovative and prosperous countries, from “low income” to “high income”, and from primitive to the most advanced technological progressive countries.

Some African leaders lack the necessary qualities of effective leadership. Self interest outweigh national interest, and this is the bane of the most important factor in driving the growth and development policies. Others lacks adequate knowledge, courage, and vision in providing the right leadership path for progress. Leadership in Africa is not rocket science. Leadership is action, not position, and many African leaders see it as a status symbol. Africans must begin to demand effective leadership for the overall health of the socio-political, and economic wellbeing of any nation. Africans does not need hand-outs from global economies, but effective leaders. Without good and effective leaders, Africa, in the long run, will not be able to overcome the numerous challenges it is facing.

If Africa nations must progress, the leaders will have to play important role to achieving well-being, self-esteem, and freedom for its people. Ineffective leaders bring so much pains and sufferings, social division, poverty, and ultimately ruin the country. Many Africans disregard  the necessary prerequisite for effective leadership by electing leaders who lacks the basic skills and experiences to drive the growth and development process. Tribal and religious sentiments play destructive roles in the development trajectory of most African nations.
